Nixson Benitez is from Des Moines, Iowa and grew up mainly in the east and south side of Des Moines. His passion has left a legacy at the University of Northern Iowa. For this reason he was selected by the university president for a national award. Benitez recieved the Newman Civic Fellow for the 2022-2023 academic year and represented the University of Northern Iowa at the annual gathering of Newman Civic Fellows.

Benitez got recognized from Iowa PBS during Hispanic Heritage Month on the show “In Their Words.” In 2021 Benitez got inducted to the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame as a result of his ambitious leadership.
